Spring Fashion: The Latest Looks to Welcome Spring in Style https://www.avenuecalgary.com/shopping-style/fashion/calgary-spring-style/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 15:57:55 +0000 https://www.avenuecalgary.com/?p=114035 From coastal glam to sporty chic, these spring looks will help refresh your wardrobe for the warmer months.

Coastal Glam

The stylist says: “More is more with this look, but when it is broken down, this is just four reliable pieces. I often pull inspiration from different trends to create a juxtaposed look that can translate to many different settings. When putting different textures together for spring, seek out contrasting trends for vibes straight from the runways in Europe.”

Dress: Milla $475, Jacket: The North Face $95, both from Vespucci. Visor: Dior (stylist supplied). Shoes: Ilse Jacobsen $248, from espy Experience. Photo by Jared Sych.

Denim Tux

The stylist says: “Denim will always be a style staple that reigns supreme. Don’t be afraid to double up on your denim — you’ll be surprised how it can transform your look.”

Playsuit: Kivari $245 on sale, from Collins St. Jacket: Ganni $295, from Vespucci. Shoes: Canada West Boots $149 on sale, from Stampede Boot Company. Photo by Jared Sych.

Sporty Chic

The stylist says: “Athleisure usually involves sneakers and track pants. But right now, runways are showing us the evolution of this trend. Try pairing tailored pieces with classic sportswear for the perfect amount of contrast.”

A model mirrored wearing a jacket, skirt, boots, gloves and sunglasses.
Jacket: Kaffe $169, Gloves: Ichi $79, Skirt: Ichi $89, Shoes: Dansi $249, all from espy Experience. Sunglasses: Saint Laurent $295, from Vespucci. Photo by Jared Sych.

Florals

The stylist says: “It’s easy to get playful just by adding a sequin clutch or a fun sneaker to a dress that could otherwise be articulated in an entirely different setting. Allow your prints and colors to be inspired by the season and don’t feel obligated to reserve those ‘fun’ pieces for a special occasion.”

Dress: Dolce & Gabbana $995, from Vespucci. Handbag: Alessia on sale for $22, Shoes: Converse $49.99, both from Marshalls. Earrings: Kuch Jewelry, $150. Photo by Jared Sych.

Prep Nostalgia

The stylist says: “The Americana prep style has dominated fashion for a while now, but this look is breaking school rules. Once again utilizing different textures, this is an easy way to transition your outfit into spring by picking pieces like a thicker knit polo, faux leather or wearing white socks with black loafers.”

A model mirrored wearing a hat, a cropped top, skirt and loafers.
Hat: Hermes $395, from Vespucci. Top: Grey Lab $40, from Marshalls. Skirt: Nonchalant $325 from Collins St. Shoes: Chanel (stylist supplied). Photo by Jared Sych.

Calgary Style: How to Own Your Age https://www.avenuecalgary.com/shopping-style/fashion/calgary-style-how-to-own-your-age/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 14:41:15 +0000 https://www.avenuecalgary.com/?p=111243 Stylish centenarian Rochelle Evans chooses to be true to herself.

If you ask 101-year-old Rochelle Evans how she describes her style, the answer is very simple: “I have
no style. I’m just me.”

Indeed, Evans’ petite, spry frame and cheeky sense of humour radiate the kind of self-assurance that comes with living authentically throughout the decades. You’ll find Evans out walking every day — she enjoys getting outdoors as much as she can (“I love to garden,” she says) — and spending time with her granddaughter, Madeline Leew, whom she has lived with for nearly seven years.

Leew’s husband, who works with photographer Devin Featherstone, was the mutual connection that landed Evans this modelling gig.

Featherstone conceptualized the fun, fashion-forward photo shoot with a senior model. He then brought in stylist Emilie Gagnon (clothing and accessories are stylist’s own) and hair and makeup artist Bryan Francisco. “We had prosecco and listened to Elvis Presley and let Rochelle dance and tell us jokes,” Featherstone says. “[It] was one of the more memorable shoots I have been part of.”

Indeed, the joie de vivre Featherstone captured can be attributed to the model’s mindset: “Be yourself at all times,” Evans says, “whether it’s in fashion or not.”

Chinenye Otakpor is known for her captivating, colourful outfits — often inspired by her mood of the moment. “As soon as you put on a good outfit, you feel a lot better, like you can take on the world,” she says.

A rehabilitation specialist who has worked in mental health for 10 years, Otakpor is also the founder of the fashion blog Queen’s Playground, which she uses as a platform to advocate for mental health and amplify businesses owned by visible minorities. One of her favourite brands is Fumi The Label. “Regardless of how much people may think there is a lot of visibility, there is never enough,” she says.

Expressing herself through fashion is a positive outlet for Otakpor’s own mental health. Describing her style as “feminine with an edge,” she is drawn to exaggerated shoulders, puffed sleeves and billowing pants that accentuate an hourglass silhouette.

Followers of Queen’s Playground know that Otakpor also loves a monochromatic look. “Play around with layering lighter and darker tones of the same colour,” she says. “They always mesh together.”

Every year at the Calgary Stampede, people show up in droves wearing their western-themed best. This year, despite the heat, people still brought their A-game. While cowboy boots, hats and denim are staples year after year, many outfits also feature special items with their own interesting stories.

Here are some of the cool looks we saw this year at the 2024 Calgary Stampede.

Wei Tu

This was Wei Tu’s first time at the Calgary Stampede. Tu wore a vintage, red button-down shirt with black accents that was brought over from Tu’s partner’s aunt’s vintage shop in Eastern Canada.

Bren Little Light

Most of Bren Little Light’s outfit was thrifted, with some key exceptions: The hat is from Calgary company Smithbilt Hats, while the jewellery, which includes earrings and a matching necklace, was handmade by a talented Stoney Nakoda artist named Melinda Bearspaw.

Marek Pilniak

After a great first Stampede experience, Marek Pilniak, who moved from Poland and now resides in Dublin, is back visiting extended family in Calgary for his second Stampede visit. Pilniak shared that he was given this western-wear shirt as a birthday gift for his second trip.

Laura (left) and Cameron Todd

Laura and Cameron Todd pose inside the BMO Centre in their western-wear fits. The Todds were the first couple to be married in the rodeo arena and started a western-wear resale business six years ago. In past years, these Stampede enthusiasts have used the proceeds from their business to bring neighbours and friends, including newcomer Ukrainian neighbours, to their first Stampede.

Connie DeSousa

Connie DeSousa is a local Calgary chef behind spots like Charcut and Charbar. This year, DeSousa wore a Smithbilt hat, which was customized with dried wildflowers from Wild About Flowers for her wedding three days before, with a dress from Cody & Sioux and pink boots from 27 Boutique.

Kim Noseworthy’s three-decade modelling career has taken her around the globe and recently evolved into her latest venture: School of Walk (SofW). Founded in the fall of 2023, SofW provides aspiring models, politicians and other clients with tangible tips on how to walk through life with confidence.

“I always teach to shine from the inside,” Noseworthy says. “If you are holding yourself well and feeling confident, that is going to highlight your outfit.”

As far as her own day-to-day style goes, Noseworthy can mostly be found pairing a crop top with a flowy skirt and kitten heels, or a blouse with a pair of cargos — balancing comfort with professionalism, particularly while teaching at SofW.

“[As a model,] I’ve had to remain fairly neutral as a canvas, and that has transitioned into my personal life,” she says, noting she typically opts for minimal makeup and jewellery. “But, when I do have the opportunity, I love to get glammed up.”
