Scott Ross-Molyneux and his wife Allison Iriye embrace horror (the fictional kind, that is), and are now sharing their love of the genre through Nocturne Books, a new horror and dark fiction bookstore in Marda Loop.

Located on the lower level of The Shops at Avenue 34, Nocturne offers a curated selection of dark fiction books spanning genres such as sci-fi, thriller, fantasy, speculative fiction and more. Ross-Molyneux and Iriye define dark fiction as an “overarching category of literature that involves themes that may generally disturb, frighten, and/or unsettle.”

Ross-Molyneux says he and Iriye (who is an avid horror reader) were always disappointed in the selection of books at big box retailers. That, coupled with inspiration from Slow Burn Books, a successful romance bookstore just doors away from Nocturne’s storefront, convinced the pair to open their own genre-specific, brick-and-mortar store.

“In this day and age, it’s just really refreshing to walk in, buy a book and then it’s yours,” says Ross-Molyneux.

Since opening Nocturne at the end of November, Ross-Molyneux has been happily surprised by the reception from shoppers, which has echoed the pair’s thoughts about the lack of a one-stop shop for horror book readers.

“I was blown away on the opening weekend [by] just how many people came in and said the exact same thing, which is, ‘I go to a bunch of other stores, can never find the book I want, the horror section is so small,'” says Ross-Molyneux. “It’s been kind of like deja vu, hearing that over and over again.”

Nocturne Books also has a consignment program that will showcase local and lesser-known authors’ works on its shelves. Ross-Molyneux is still putting it together (literally, he is building the bookshelf for the consigned books).

Naturally, we asked Ross-Molyneux for some book recommendations. He recently read and recommends Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, a haunted house story told from the perspective of an eight-year-old girl, and Root Rot by Saskia Nislow, a horror story told from the perspective of nine different children visiting their grandfather’s lake house.

A burger sits on a plate

Donald McRonald Burger (with Coney Sauce) from Class Clown Hamburgers

This year’s most unforgettable bite for me was the Donald McRonald burger from Class Clown. At first glance, it leans into the classic formula: two patties, two slices of American cheese, ketchup, mustard, raw onion and pickles on a buttered bun. I asked for Coney sauce, a savoury, tangy meat sauce made from crumbled beef simmered with onions and spices, to be added inside the burger. The first bite gives you this bold and savoury punch of flavour that lets you know you’re in for something special. The patties stay juicy, the toppings stay crisp and the sauce pulls it all together in the most satisfying way. It’s the burger that still comes to mind without me even trying. — Sannah Chawdhry, editorial intern, Avenue

Rock n Shrimp from Fuji Ramen & Sushi

I finally got in to try reader favourite Fuji Ramen & Sushi in the city’s south earlier this year, and have since gone a couple more times. Everything we’ve tried is so delicious. From the ramen to the beautifully presented sushi, it’s all tasty and satisfying. But one of my favourites has to be the Rock n Shrimp appetizer. It’s crispy tempura shrimp that has great crunch without being overly greasy, served in an edible deep-fried bowl. It’s drizzled with spicy and Japanese mayos, and topped with aonori, togarashi and chili pepper threads. A definite crowdpleaser. — Colleen Seto, executive editor, Avenue and RPM Content Studio

Salt & Pepper Mushroom from JinBar

When I was growing up, my aunt would buy cheap mushrooms, deep-fry them and serve them to me with a large (probably unhealthy) amount of soya sauce. It was the beginning of my love affair with the vegetable, so imagine my delight at finding a classed-up version of this snack at JinBar! Its salt and pepper mushrooms are lightly cooked and topped with crispy onion and chili flakes, with a bowl of Korean mustard soy for dipping. Pair these deliciously umami flavours with a creative cocktail — I like whatever version of an Old Fashioned it’s currently serving — and savour JinBar’s fusion approach to Korean food. — Nathan Iles, editor, The Scene

Ice Cream Sandwiches from Sunshine Ice Cream

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lari (@sunshine.icecream.yyc)

Larissa Costella, the pastry chef at Salt & Brick, is also the genius behind Sunshine Ice Cream, an artisanal ice cream sandwich pop-up that I experienced for the first time this past summer. Most of the flavours change with each pop-up, but on my visit, options ranged from a mango lassi fro-yo with salted lime sugar cookies to ginger sparkler cookies with vanilla bean ice cream in the middle. Besides being incredibly delicious, one of the things I appreciated most about these ice cream sandwiches was how the ice cream didn’t ooze out as you ate, ensuring that you got to enjoy the flavours of the soft cookies and the creamy ice cream in each bite. Follow Sunshine Ice Cream’s Instagram account to stay in the loop about upcoming pop-ups (you’ll probably see me there). — Alana Willerton, digital managing editor, Avenue

Whether you’re in a relationship or wading into the dating pool for the first time in a while, the winter season offers plenty of unique dating opportunities. Here are a few activities worth trying out with that special someone during the chillier months.

Get competitive at PowerPlay

It’s easy to find common interests to enjoy together (or try something new) with the variety of things to do at PowerPlay. Show off your bowling skills at the 16-lane alley, practice your swing in the baseball or golf simulator, catch a movie together or play some arcade games. The entertainment facility also has a restaurant if you both work up an appetite.

100 Anderson Rd. S.E., powerplay.ca

Go skating (or try other winter activities) at Bowness Park

If you love skating, Bowness Park’s outdoor lagoon is a great place to try it with a partner (skate rentals are available). The park also has cool features like crokicurl, ice bikes, an ice trail and cross-country ski trails, which means you can pack plenty of different adventures into your date night. Bowness Park’s winter features are weather-dependent, so be sure to check whether they are open or closed on the website in advance.

calgary.ca

Take an ice cream workshop together

The team behind the popular Made by Marcus ice cream shops offers ice cream workshops during the cooler seasons. With your partner, sign up for an Ice Cream 101 or Date Night workshop to learn the science behind how to make ice cream. You’ll also learn how to make pints of your own special flavour to bring home so you can keep enjoying the memory of your date night for weeks (or days) to come.

Suite 105, 1119 10 Ave. S.E., madebymarcus.ca

Play some arcade games

Stay warm and bring out each other’s competitive spirits with some arcade games at local eateries and bars. Play games like Ms. Pac-Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at Greta (which has an all-day happy hour on Wednesdays), try your luck at pinball at Pinbar (which has free pinball on Mondays and Wednesdays) or make your way over to The Rec Room for pool, shuffleboard and a slew of arcade game options.

Greta, 213 10 Ave. S.W., gretabar.com; Pinbar, 501 17 Ave. S.W., 403-930-8175, pinbaryyc.com; The Rec Room, 1180, 901 64 Ave. N.E., 587-535-6077, therecroom.com

Learn how to cook together

Cooking together at home is often a fun date night idea. But if your recipe book is getting a bit stale, or you just want to learn how to make something new, consider taking a cooking class together at The Cookbook Co. Cooks. Starting in January, there are classes to learn how to make bread, Mexican cuisine, vegetarian fare, pasta and more.

722 11 Ave. S.W., 403-265-6066, cookbookcooks.com

Relax in a private sauna and cold plunge suite for two

Leela Thermal House is a new hydrotherapy spa with private suites that are designed for one or two people. This is a great way to escape the cold winter weather for a bit while relaxing and decompressing with your own sauna and cold plunge tub.

Explore twinkling lights at the zoo during Zoolights

Every winter, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo becomes a glittering, glowing spectacle during the evening for Zoolights. With countless lights and light figures to discover, it’s a romantic and magical setting for a date night. Check out this year’s edition until January 4, 2026.

210 St. George’s Dr. N.E., 403-232-9300, calgaryzoo.com

Have a cocktail and see a movie at The Plaza Theatre

This independent movie theatre in Kensington is a cozy destination for a romantic movie night. Arrive early to sip on a drink at the theatre’s cocktail bar (you can also bring drinks into the theatre itself) and get a snack from the café in the renovated pink lobby before the movie starts.

How to Experience Winter in Jasper https://www.avenuecalgary.com/things-to-do/mountains/experience-winter-jasper/ Thu, 04 Dec 2025 14:17:50 +0000 https://www.avenuecalgary.com/?p=119644 From quiet trails and fresh powder, to good eats and historic hotels, you’ll find winter fun for everyone in this uncrowded, natural wonderland.

The post How to Experience Winter in Jasper appeared first on Avenue Calgary.

]]>

Along the magnificent Icefields Parkway, past the Athabasca Glacier and down the Athabasca River, you’ll find the quaint town of Jasper. Even before the devastating forest fire that ravaged the town in 2024, Jasper was not nearly as busy as Banff or Lake Louise. However, Jasper holds the same appeal for tourists and adventurers, with picturesque, snow-blanketed landscapes, streets full of delicious dining options, the nearby Marmot Basin ski area featuring 3,000 feet of vertical elevation, and a variety of winter activities.

Those looking for a getaway where quiet reprieve meets a good time need look no further.

Quiet among the trees

A starry sky over the mountains
Jasper is renowned for its dark-sky preserve. Photo by Jack Fusco.

At more than 11,000 square kilometres in size, Jasper National Park is the largest park in the
Canadian Rockies and the world’s second-largest dark-sky preserve. On a clear night, stars shine wherever you are in the park, but, for prime visibility, visit Pyramid Island, Jasper Lake, Old Fort Point or the toe of the Athabasca Glacier.

Climbing is a year-round affair in Jasper. Take on a multi-hour excursion with Rockaboo Mountain Adventures to climb a frozen waterfall — no previous experience needed! Or stay close to town and conquer the new 15-metre ice sculpture in the heart of Jasper.

Good eats

Jasper Brewing Company, Canada’s first national-park brewery and a Jasper staple, opened its doors in 2005. After closing due to damage from the 2024 wildfires, it reopened last spring. Swing by and taste the beloved brewskies for yourself, and order a bite while you’re at it.

Just over a year old, The Maligne Range is one of Jasper’s newest restaurants and distillers. The upscale rustic ambiance invites you to savour a drink at the bar or by the fireplace and stay for a while. The menu is inspired by Canadian flavours and includes redefined boozy beverages.

For a taste of history, wander to De’d Dog Bar & Grill, where you’ll find pub classics like a Canadian burger, nachos and poutine. The establishment has been serving pints and bites since 1927.

And for a taste of the variety of great food in Jasper, book the Downtown Foodie Tour and discover gourmet stops within central Jasper.

A variety of accomodation

After a day out exploring the trails, hitting the slopes or relaxing with spa services — whatever a rejuvenating getaway looks like for you — turn in at an accommodation that suits you, too. You’ll find everything from luxury lodges to cozy cabins, historic hotels and humble hostels in Jasper.

Built in 1925, the Astoria Hotel is a local landmark and one of Jasper’s original hotels. Enjoy modern accommodation in a historic environment with its newly renovated rooms. Book the Record Room to indulge in the vintage feel and spin some tunes in your room with the record player and vinyl record selection.

Forty-five minutes from Jasper, you’ll find the newly opened Jasper East Hostel. While outside of town proper, the hostel has a trailhead right outside your door and a brewery only a two-minute walk away. It offers single-occupancy rooms, two fully stocked kitchens and a sanctuary space with infrared therapy lights. The upper floor features red-light therapy throughout, including all upper-floor bedrooms, making for a calming and comfortable environment.

Fresh powder

Two skiers ski down a hill

Marmot Basin is among the most underrated marvels of Jasper National Park. The ski resort is not as well known as other Alberta and British Columbia slopes, meaning you’re more likely to shred some pow without serious wait times. The Knob Quad Chair, completed two years ago, takes skiers and boarders up to 8,261 feet in elevation, providing access to vast terrain above the treeline, complete with exceptional views. A 20-minute hike from the top of the chair, you can summit Marmot Peak.

The Jasper in January winter festival returns in 2026 from January 16 to February 1. Watch for food and beverage activations on the mountain, live music and various promotions on ski packages. The townsite will also offer plenty of après-ski fun.
